Importance Of Creating Custom Error Pages
First, they keep people on your website. If the default server error pages are merely used, your visitors have already left your website when they reach the error page on encountering an error.

If a search engine encounters a bad link or a non-existent page on you website, it will dead end the search bots when they're sent to the default server error page because there's no page back links ... very bad.

As you can see, the generic error page has ads taking YOUR visitors elsewhere & there are no backward links to your site's pages.

Simplified Error Page Creation
The following instructions are the easiest way to do this... but you are free to be creative. Just be certain to TEST everything in both Internet Explorer & Firefox, at a minimum, to make sure they all work correctly!
NOTE: You Must verify that you can create and modify an .htaccess file on your host's server! Yahoo Web Hosting for instance DOES NOT allow this!
You'll need 5 error pages:
"error400" with Title: "Error 400: Request Not Understood By Server"
"error401" with Title: "Error 401: Authorization Required"
"error403" with Title: "Error 403: Public Access Not Allowed"
"error404" with Title: "Error 404: Page Cannot Be Found"
"error500" with Title: "Error 500: Internal Server Error"
