The Importance Of Creating Custom Error Pages
First, they keep people on your website. If the default server error pages are merely used, your visitors have already left your website when they reach the error page on encountering an error.
This costs you visitors... a bad thing.

Making IT Work For You
If a search engine encounters a bad link or a non-existent page on you website, it will dead end the search bots when they're sent to the default server error page because there's no page links back... very bad.
Example of generic server error page: CLICK HERE (opens in popup)
As you can see, the generic error page has ads taking YOUR visitors elsewhere & there are no backward links to your site's pages.
Example of a custom error page: CLICK HERE (opens in popup)
This page gives info to visitors about the error, is a little entertaining, provides a previous page button and has links to the rest of the site.
The following instructions are the easiest way to do this... but you are free to be creative. Just be certain to TEST everything in both Internet Explorer & Firefox, at a minimum, to make sure they all work correctly!
NOTE: You Must verify that you can create and modify .htaccess file on your host's server! Yahoo Web Hosting for instance DOES NOT allow that, so don't try this!
You'll need 5 error pages:
"error400" with Title: "Error 400: Request Not Understood By Server"
"error401" with Title: "Error 401: Authorization Required"
"error403" with Title: "Error 403: Public Access Not Allowed"
"error404" with Title: "Error 404: Page Cannot Be Found"
"error500" with Title: "Error 500: Internal Server Error"
Download the necessary code and complete instructions:
Have fun, but follow the directions in the zip file and it's a snap!
The extra time it takes to do this once and do it right, shows visitors that you do really care about their user experience at your site... a good thing!
Creating custom error pages that help keep visitors on your site and gives them a little entertainment in the process will pay dividends down the road.
